CHUCKLES IN THE CHURCH: Celebrating women, challenging misogyny and finding plenty to laugh about!
What has the number eight got to do with women? Quite a lot, as it turns out.
8 March is International Women’s Day, and earlier this year a brilliant group of funny women, who began their stand-up comedy journey with me in Exeter, performed to a packed audience to mark IWD 2026.
Since then, several have gone on to perform across the South West and beyond, including at this year’s Exeter Comedy Festival, again to a capacity audience.
Now, eight of these witty women are taking to the stage once more – this time in a fabulously atmospheric medieval church near Crediton.
Chuckles in the Church performers include: Eloise Dale, Joanna Baughan-Kiddle, Jane Quicke, Molly Kinsey, Christina G, Law Turley, Frankie Bee and Dee Dee Studholme Coté. This comedy night forms part of Wondrous Women, an initiative celebrating women’s stories, creativity and voices, while challenging misogyny and encouraging greater equality.
Created by Reverend Tim Collins, Rector of the Netherexe Mission Community, Wondrous Women includes arts events, women’s stories, poetry and the comedy night at St Cyr and St Julitta Church in Newton St Cyres.
Importantly, the evening also has a charitable purpose, with part of the proceeds being donated to North Devon Against Domestic Abuse, supporting its work with women affected by domestic abuse.
Maggie says, “I’ve seen a marked increase in women joining my comedy classes, developing the confidence to stand up, be seen, be heard – and make people laugh. This group of funny women - and many, many more - are making a difference to the visibility and confidence of women.”
