I Wanna Hold Your Hand...

This hand belongs to a local, up-n-coming stand up comedian, but whose is it?

Come to City Gate Hotel, Exeter Comedy Mash-Up on 7 September, to find out.

But first...

Tips from a comedy coach, not heard at Edinburgh Festival:

Laugh or smile at problems, even when you don’t feel like it. Sustained smiling can help soften the pain although it will make you look like a Cheshire cat. Result.

If you wake in the dead of night, as I do, try smiling and laughing, to prevent thinking and to produce some feel-good hormones. Bed companions might feel a little worried or concerned that they are sleeping with a 'fruit-and-nut-case', but reassure them, you are only trying to go back to sleep… honest.

If you are delivering a talk or comedy set, get them smiling/laughing within 12 seconds. 30 seconds, yikes! Start gurning…

At the end of every day, find three things that you enjoyed. If you can, share with a friend. You will go to sleep satisfied… ahhhh.

I wanna hold your hand.

Have you ever felt fearful and alone when facing a new venture? I’m lucky to have people around me, to hold my hand and provide support.

New comedians can feel that they are at the mic, all alone. Over the years though, I have learnt that generally, audiences are totally on the side of the comedian. There is a whole load of togetherness.

Of course, there are exceptions – it depends on the act, the cultural, political and social conditions – there’s a lot of variables, but the premise that the comedian is keen to chat, and the audience is happy to laugh, is worth remembering.

Last week, a guy at my new Stand Up Comedy Mash-Up at Exeter City Gate Hotel, said afterwards, he wanted to come to my comedy course but was hesitant. I said, there’s a lot of hand-holding, that's hand holding, no pressure to be funny and lots of group support, so come have a go. Maybe, he too will be performing at The City Gate soon.

Mash-Up is the first Thursday of every month. Advanced booking £5 +plus booking fee through Eventbrite. Please visit The City Gate Hotel website to book direct. The link will be live in the next few days and incur no booking fee - £7.50 on the door.

Charity Fundraising: A percentage of proceeds will go to St Petrock's - for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed.

See you on 7 September, 3 October, 7 November, 7 and 28 December. Support local up-and-coming comedians bring and some good cheer into your life.
