...in the butt! Especially cigarette butts. People are still tossing these dirty dog ends on the floor. Found out recently that they leach toxic chemicals—such as arsenic and lead, to name but a few—into the environment and can contaminate water. They can poison fish as well as animals, who inadvertently eat cigarette butts. I once spotted a seagull with a butt in its mouth – guessing it was going to feed its chick.
But in Exmouth, we are doing something about it. Exmouth Town Council have introduced a Ballot Bin for Butts. You can choose in which slot to pop your butt – depending on your preferred choice of Cream Teas – Devon or Cornwall. Fun? There’s just the one bin for now, ‘butt’ what a good idea!
I found this out from Zoey Cooper, Exmouth Town Council Climate Change Officer, in my prep for a pilot comedy workshop, that will incorporate a range of techniques for exploring humour and the climate emergency. We plan to investigate creative solutions/ideas, whilst alleviating eco-anxiety and having fun.
There are only half a dozen spaces left, so get booking peeps. “But I can’t come. I have something on.” No worries, we will report back on the event and are hoping to run more in the future. If you haven’t something on, get your butt down to Exmouth, The Ocean on Wednesday 19 February, at 6pm. Booking essential.
