The Golden Rule
When I’m teaching stand-up or clowning, I have one golden rule:
No put-downs.
That includes yourself.
Love yourself. Have a go. See what happens.
When people feel free to experiment — without the pressure of having to be funny — something shifts. We start to see potential. Every single week I witness it: the laughter, the breakthroughs, the growing confidence. It’s remarkable.
Thank you to my brilliant classes for trusting the process ❤️
I remember some comedy teachers asking, “Who’s the funniest?” — with that unspoken “Go on then, make us laugh” energy — but offering no guidance on how to craft comedy.
Comedy is an art form. Techniques matter. Structure helps. Tools generate material.
And when I hear, “You can’t teach comedy — you’re born funny,” I smile. We don’t come out of the birth canal laughing...
It’s been a dark week in the world – again… Now, more than ever, finding space to laugh and being in the company of those who make us smile is so important. Love to all those who have been or are suffering. And remember to love 'EWE'.😊
If you're in Exeter, on Sunday 8 March, a whole fab bunch of wonderful, witty women will be performing at Exeter City Gate to mark International Women’s Day. Please come and support if you can. Here’s the link to book: IWD Witty Women
And if you fancy trying a bit of stand-up yourself, join us for six weeks on either Monday or Tuesday evenings, starting 9 or 10 March. Limited spaces. 18+
One participant wrote last week:“It’s very therapeutic.”
It really is.
As usual, a huge thanks for your support from Maggie and the team :)
