Not me!
My house is having a facelift – hurrah! It is now cloaked in lime-based mortar so no more leaks. Hurrah! My finances took a hit resulting in the cancellation of my trip to Edinburgh Fest. Boo! On the plus side, I saved money and enjoyed a break with my elderly mum - she loves my company. Hurrah!
Enough of the pantomime.
When applied to my mum, I found out she objects to the word old. I jokingly suggested using the wizened, which didn’t land well. Senior? Venerable? Mature as a vintage wine? What do you think?
Some people think they’re old at 30 or 40 or 50. On my mother’s 87 birthday, I asked her how old did she feel? She answered “25.” It’s a lesson to us all, the number might be rising, the body shrinking and creaking, but folk don’t necessary FEEL old.
My house is old – built in 1886. It needs constant care and like my mother it is a fine specimen of classy preservation. Now, will my mum approve of that term?
